The coffee plant is native to Africa, but it was Arab traders who were first responsible for extending coffee cultivation into the Near Eastern region. European colonial powers also played a crucial role in spreading coffee cultivation across the globe. They sought to establish profitable plantations in their colonies which were heavily reliant on coerced labour.
