I explored the concept of plant species offering a challenge to binary classification in terms of gender identity and researched about queer botany and how it could relate to gender fluidity. It came from the idea that plants can be ‘bi-sexual’ with biologically having both male and female parts. By integrating Judith Bulter’s theory that gender is fluid, flexible and subject to change and using botany as my visual reference, I created an abstract, 3D, 23-second motion piece with the audio being narration from Butler explaining this theory, and the concept ‘fluidity’ to drive the motion.
