Based on the Victoria Amazonica or Giant Water Lily, a freshwater, flowering plant of the Amazon Basin, The Giant Water Lily Legend is rooted in the culture of the Guarani Indigenous people of South America. The folk tale would have been passed down orally by the Guarani people over generations before the first western sighting of the Victoria Amazonica in 1801. This book intends to narrate the tale whilst educating visitors at Kew Gardens on the undermined and tragic displacement, enslavement and genocide of the Guarani people ongoing today.
