Representation of Women in Botany

Sophie Struthers
My concept explores the lack of female representation in Botany historically and currently, highlighting influential female botanists. Inspired by David King’s typography, my composition incorporates large typography to present shocking facts, replicating protest posters and establishing a powerful tone of voice. To further imply a protest tone, my publication is A3 size. Both my physical and digital publications have a simplistic, yet effective colour scheme. My pink accent colour for the typography and duotone images is inspired by Marion Bisserier’s presentation of her ‘Good Girl’ typeface in typically feminine colours to contradict the typeface’s appearance and the message. This treatment of images establishes continuity across my design, which are prominent against the black background. The images on the double-page spreads are presented on glossy paper to enhance their vibrancy.
