Breadfruit

Native to the region encompassing New Guinea and the Indo-Malay Archipelago. European botanists recognized the potential of breadfruit as a nutritious and easily grown food source in tropical regions. The idea was to introduce it to the British West Indies as a cheap food for enslaved people working on sugar plantations.
